Simple Tomato Gosthu (without Lentil & coconut)

Gosthu is an authentic south Indian sidedish recipe that can go very well with Idly/ Dosai or ven pongal. My mom usually prepare Gosthu with Moong dhal combined with vegetables like Brinjal, onion, tomato and cabbage.That will taste heavenly when eat it with hot idlis top up with a spoon of gingely oil. The recipe I have given today is very simple and quick. It doesnot need more ingredients and vegetables. Just we can cook tasty gosthu with onion and tomato itself. I dint add any lentils to it. It can be prepared in a jiffy for your breakfast. Lets go for the recipe.



Ingredients :

Tomato - 2 big
Onion - 2
Green chilli - 2 /3 (Depends on taste)
Ginger - 1 inch piece
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Garam Masala - 1/2 tsp
Kadalai Maavu / besan flour - 3 tbsp
Mustard - 1/2 tsp
Urad dhal - 1/2 tsp
Fennel - 1/2 tsp
Hing - a pinch
Curry leaves - 1 spring
Cilantro - 2 tbsp (Finely chopped)
Oil - 2 tbsp
Salt to taste

Method :

In a pan, add oil, splutter mustard seeds, fennel seeds and urad dhal. Now add chopped onions with a pinch of salt. Saute onion till it become transparent. Add chopped green chillis, ginger and curry leaves. Saute it for a while. 

Add chopped tomatoes and fry it till it become mushy. Now add turmeric powder and garam masala and mix it well. Add 2 - 3 cups of water, Hing and adjust the salt. Allow it to boil for 4-6 mins in medium flame.

In the mean time, lets prepare besan flour mix. Add 3 tbsp of besan flour in 1/2 cup of water. Mix it gently without any lumps. Now add the besan flour mix gently to the onion-tomato gravy and keep stirring for a while. Make sure it doesnot form any lumps. Add more water if needed. Allow it to boil for sometime.

Garnish with cilantro and serve it with Idly / Dosa.
